Introducing "The Bench"
"A film about Portsmouth, by the people of Portsmouth." - Jackie Green
A young girl, wandering a museum’s gardens, takes a break on a bench and stumbles across a scrapbook that takes us on a journey through 200 years of Portsmouth history. We start in 1831 with three women contemplating the transportations to Australia after the Swing Riots, then join the planning of a prison heist after 1874’s Battle of Southsea. In 1926, we watch a man wrestle with shell shock from the trenches ten years earlier, then watch a woman on the bench writing a letter to her beau after her home was destroyed by a WW2 timebomb. Finally, the scrapbook shares an epic pop-punk music video from the 80s, and ends with a contemporary comedy sitcom. We glimpse the past, the present, and the young girl takes these stories with her into the future.
"The Bench" is a project for the Portsmouth 100 celebration, filmed at the Portsmouth Museum and Art Gallery over the course of two months earlier this summer. We are currently deep in post-production: creating the visual effects, editing and colour grading, scheduling studio sessions for the musicians... all with an aim to complete the film by October 15th. We will then hand it over to the Museum to review, and while that process is happening we will do a cast/crew/supporter screening at the end of October/early November. Details to come!
While filming is complete, thanks to a generous £1000 grant from the Portsmouth City Council and several local donors, we need funds to complete the post-production to a high standard within the deadline. My contractor mates always used to say, "You pick two: you get something cheap, quick, or quality." We're going for quick and quality, so unfortunately it's not cheap!
The crowdfund will go live soon!! Check back here or contact us below to be kept in the loop!
